Top 5 MUST DO Tips to Land That Job

Resumes can be high stress and take up a lot of your time in preparation. How do you know what to say or how to act? When you find a job you are interested in, it’s easy to become overwhelmed in preparation. It’s important to find ways to help you stand out in a crowd of other well-groomed candidates. Read our Insider’s Top 5 Tips you need to walk into an interview with confidence and leave a lasting impression.

  • Be Honest About Your Resume. Lying during an interview only gets you caught. You may be a brilliant liar and ace an interview but what happens when you start working and you can’t do what they’re asking you to do? You get fired. Simple as that. It’s never worth lying in person or on your resume.

  • Make Eye Contact, Smile, or Sit Straight. Eye contact shows you’re listening and that you’re confident. Smiling gives light to your face and relaxes you when being interviewed. Good posture is another confidence booster and shows you should be taken serious.

  • Put Your Phone on Vibrate/Put It Away. Yes we live in a digital age, but unless they specifically want you to show them something on your mobile or they asked you to bring a portfolio on your tablet, never look at your phone! It’s 1 hour of your time and I’m sure your mom will call you back.

  • DO Take your Time. Although this tip may scare almost anyone, it is an important tip to remember. Interviews are not a race. Most employers want honest answers to see if you can not only do the job, but also have the confidence for the role. Some questions can seem daunting and you may need to a minute to think. Simply say “I just need a minute to think of the answer to that question”. They will wait, and you won’t ramble on for 20 minutes until your brain finally catches up to your mouth.

  • DO Follow Up. Although the interview may have gone perfectly well, the interviewer has also seen a dozen other people. You don’t want to be forgotten! Make sure to send a thank you email after the interview and a follow up email a few days later. Remember not to be overbearing, but impressionable. Highlight the characteristics that make you qualified for the job, and let your personality shine!
